Nakatsu-kyo Gorge Autumn Foliage Walk

Kuma-Kogen · Ehime · Shikoku

Nakatsu-kyo Gorge, carved by the Nakatsu River on the Kuma Plateau in southern Ehime, is lined with smooth granite boulders and overhanging maples that blaze crimson and amber in late October. The 1.5-kilometre riverside walking path is accessible year-round but transforms into a tunnel of colour during peak koyo, with the river's clear blue-green water contrasting against the warm foliage. Several rustic minshuku and onsen ryokan on the plateau offer overnight packages timed to the peak colour window. The Kuma Plateau's elevation of around 600–800 metres ensures reliable colour each year.
