Nakagusuku Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage Ryukyu gusuku, stands on a ridge in central Okinawa with sweeping views across both coasts of the island. In autumn the castle's massive lime-stone dry-stone walls are framed by trees that adopt warm golden and russet hues, and the low-angle evening sun sets the ancient ramparts ablaze with colour. Extended evening opening hours on selected autumn weekends allow visitors to watch the sunset from the third bailey, one of Okinawa's most dramatic natural viewing platforms. The adjacent Nakamura House makes a natural cultural companion visit.
