Haaryuu is one of Okinawa's oldest festivals, dating back to the 14th century when it was held to pray for maritime safety and a bountiful catch. Colourfully painted dragon boats called haariyuu-bune race across the harbour as teams from fishing communities compete with fierce pride. The festival coincides with Golden Week, drawing enormous crowds to the Naha Port waterfront. Traditional music, food stalls, and Eisa drum performances fill the surrounding area throughout the multi-day event.
