Held annually on 5 June at Atsuta Jingū, one of Shinto's most sacred shrines and home to the legendary Kusanagi sword, the Atsuta Matsuri marks the shrine's founding over 1,900 years ago. The evening sky is lit by a spectacular fireworks display over the shrine precincts, while traditional performing arts including bugaku court dance, noh, and kendo demonstrations unfold throughout the day. Food stalls line the approach roads and the atmosphere is festive yet deeply reverent. More than 650,000 worshippers and visitors attend each year, making it Nagoya's most celebrated annual event.
