The Nagasaki Kunchi, one of Japan's most celebrated autumn festivals designated as an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property, features nighttime fireworks as a sacred and ceremonial element of the multi-day Shinto celebration at Suwa Shrine. Large peony-shaped and chrysanthemum fireworks shells burst above the steeply terraced city, with each explosion illuminating the characteristic red-and-green Nagasaki townscape below. The fireworks are fired at the opening and closing of the festival's main ceremonial days, adding a dramatic punctuation to performances of dragon dances and exotic floats that reflect Nagasaki's unique Dutch and Chinese heritage. Viewing spots on the stone steps of Suwa Shrine and along the hillside slopes fill hours in advance.
