Held on August 2nd and 3rd each year along the Shinano River, Nagaoka's fireworks festival is widely regarded as one of the finest in Japan. The iconic 'Phoenix' sequence fires three simultaneous shells that spread two kilometres across the sky in a blaze of gold and crimson. The event carries deep meaning as a symbol of reconstruction following wartime bombing and later earthquake recovery. Over 100,000 spectators line both riverbanks each night to witness more than 20,000 shells launched.
