Held at Matsubara Hachiman Shrine in Himeji's Shirahama district, the Nada no Kenka Matsuri (Fighting Festival) is famed as one of Japan's most thrilling and aggressive festivals. Teams from seven local neighborhoods carry enormous, elaborately decorated mikoshi (portable shrines) and intentionally ram them against each other in a contest of strength and communal pride. The clashing of the heavy shrines — each weighing up to two tons — is believed to please the deity and determine which community will have good fortune in the year ahead. The festival has been designated an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Japan.
