Ōkawachi-yama, tucked in a narrow forested valley outside Imari city, is a remarkably preserved historic pottery village where around 30 traditional kilns have produced prized Imari and Nabeshima porcelain since the 1660s. In autumn, the steep valley sides erupt in brilliant red and orange maples that frame the whitewashed kiln walls, stone paths, and trickling streams in a scene of extraordinary beauty. The valley's narrow entrance historically guarded its ceramic secrets, and today that seclusion means visitor numbers remain refreshingly low even during peak foliage season. Many studios open their workshops in autumn, allowing visitors to watch master potters at work amid the seasonal splendour.
