The Hiba-Dogo-Taishaku Quasi-National Park straddles the Hiroshima-Shimane border and contains some of the most pristine beech and oak forest in the Chugoku region. In mid-October the Hiba Highlands erupt in gold, ochre and crimson, with particularly dramatic colour around Hiba Pond and the summit trail of Mt. Kanmuri. The park supports a guided autumn trekking programme connecting local eco-tourism operators in Shobara City. Wildlife including Japanese deer and golden eagles are frequently sighted during the autumn season.
