The Mito Hanabi Taikai is one of Ibaraki Prefecture's leading summer fireworks events, held on the banks of the Naka River near the centre of Mito City. The programme includes several thousand fireworks shells, with sections dedicated to creative themed compositions, traditional Japanese forms, and large star-mine finales. Mito's status as a castle town with historical samurai heritage adds a cultural dimension to the evening, and the event is often paired with visits to the nearby Kairakuen Garden the following morning. The city is reachable from Ueno Station in Tokyo in around 75 minutes via the JR Joban Line.
