Mitaki-dera, a serene Buddhist temple founded in 809, becomes one of Hiroshima's most beloved koyo destinations in late November. Dozens of maple trees explode in crimson and gold around the cascading Mitaki waterfall and ancient stone lanterns. The temple's three-tiered pagoda framed by autumn colour is one of the most photographed scenes in western Japan. The site is easily reached by JR San-yo Line, making it ideal for a half-day excursion.
