Iya Onsen, perched dramatically on the cliffs above the Iya River, is one of Shikoku's most striking ryokan experiences and a koyo destination in its own right. Guests descend by cable car to rotenburo (open-air baths) carved into the cliff face, where scarlet and golden maple trees frame the steaming pools and emerald river below. Multi-course kaiseki meals in the ryokan feature seasonal Iya mountain vegetables and fresh river fish. Autumn visits in November are considered the most beautiful time at this tucked-away hideaway.
