Zuigan-ji, the National Treasure Zen temple founded in 828 CE and rebuilt by Date Masamune in 1609, becomes exceptionally atmospheric in autumn when the ancient cedar-lined approach glows with scattered maple colour. The temple's rear garden caves carved into rock cliffs provide a unique backdrop to the golden foliage. Late November light reflecting off Matsushima Bay behind coloured trees creates iconic layered scenery. The nearby Entsu-in Garden, a sub-temple, is particularly celebrated for its illuminated maple evenings.
