Matsushima Bay contains approximately 260 small pine-forested islands and islets, recognised since the Edo period as one of Japan's Nihon Sankei (Three Views). Sightseeing cruise boats depart regularly from Matsushima pier on 50-minute circuits through the bay's sculpted rock formations. On shore, the historic Zen temple Zuigan-ji — rebuilt by Date Masamune in 1609 — and the iconic red Fukuura Bridge add cultural depth to the natural scenery. In winter, Matsushima is a major gathering point for white-tailed eagles.
