Matsumoto Castle, a National Treasure known for its striking black-and-white exterior, is illuminated nightly throughout winter, making it one of Japan's most photogenic cold-weather castle experiences. The castle's dark façade and the reflection in its surrounding moat create a stark, dramatic tableau that is especially powerful when light snow dusts the towers. On select December evenings the city organises special winter illumination events with additional lighting and seasonal market stalls around the castle grounds. The nearby old town of Nawate-dori and Nakamachi provide warm cafés and craft sake bars for post-visit warming.
