Held each August in central Matsumoto, the Matsumoto Taiko Festival gathers taiko groups from across the region and beyond for two days of energetic street performances around the city's historic core. Teams parade between performance stages near the moat of Matsumoto Castle and through the pedestrian shopping arcades, competing and collaborating in a festival atmosphere that blends tradition with contemporary percussion artistry. The thundering rhythms against the backdrop of the iconic black castle provide memorable photo opportunities, and the event is timed to coincide with Matsumoto's broader summer matsuri season, including the Bon Odori. Admission to most outdoor stages is free.
