Lake Shinji's vast flat surface turns into a mirror for one of Shimane Prefecture's premier fireworks shows each mid-August. Approximately 4,000 shells are launched from a pontoon on the lake, with Matsue Castle's black donjon visible on the northern shore. The event coincides with Obon season, lending it a poignant, spiritual atmosphere as families gather to honour ancestors. Viewing spots along the Kyomise shopping street and Shirakata Tenmangū Shrine fill hours before the 8 p.m. start.
