Matsue Castle, one of only twelve original feudal keeps remaining in Japan, becomes the centrepiece of Shimane Prefecture's finest cherry blossom festival each spring. Around 200 cherry trees planted along the castle's moat and within its grounds burst into bloom, perfectly framing the black 'Plover Castle' tower. Flat-bottomed horikawa pleasure boats glide through the moat beneath overhanging branches, offering unique water-level blossom views, and evening illuminations bathe the ancient keep in a warm golden light. Cultural performances and local craft and food stalls fill the castle grounds throughout the festival period.
