Towada Art Center, opened in 2008, anchors a one-kilometre outdoor arts corridor called Arts Towada along Kanchō-dōri boulevard in the planned city of Towada. Permanent outdoor works by Yayoi Kusama, Ron Mueck, and Yoshitomo Nara — among others — are dramatically transformed by winter snow, creating extraordinary juxtapositions of bold contemporary sculpture and silent white landscape. The indoor galleries host rotating international exhibitions throughout the winter season. The project was conceived to revitalise the city through art and remains one of Japan's most ambitious public art interventions.
