The Lake Shikotsu Ice Festival takes place on the shores of one of Japan's clearest and deepest crater lakes, using its famously pure water to create luminous ice pavilions and sculptures. Because the lake water contains very few minerals, the resulting ice is exceptionally transparent with a stunning aquamarine hue. At night, hidden lighting inside the ice structures produces an ethereal blue glow that has made this festival one of Hokkaido's most photographed winter events. The festival site is compact and walkable, with illuminated tunnels, ice walls, and interactive spray-ice art.
