The Philosopher's Path is a 2-kilometre stone walkway alongside a cherry-tree-lined canal in the Higashiyama district of Kyoto, connecting the Silver Pavilion (Ginkaku-ji) to Nanzen-ji temple. In late March and early April, hundreds of Somei Yoshino cherry trees form a pink canopy over the canal, dropping petals into the water below in a scene of extraordinary beauty. The path takes its name from the philosopher Nishida Kitaro, who is said to have meditated here on his daily walk to Kyoto University. Small cafés, craft shops and sub-temples line the route.
