Founded in 1924, the Kyoto Prefectural Botanical Garden is Japan's oldest public botanical garden and harbours one of its finest collections of cherry trees, with more than 200 varieties represented across the grounds. The famous Cherry Promenade (Sakura Namiki) features 120 Somei Yoshino trees forming a 200-metre tunnel of blossoms that is one of Kyoto's most photographed spring images. Beyond the promenade, rare cultivars such as Fugenzo, Ukon, and Kiku-zakura bloom in the dedicated cherry collection area, extending the interest for botanical enthusiasts well into late April. The garden's spacious lawns make it an ideal spot for a relaxed hanami picnic away from the crowds of central Kyoto.
