Experience Snow/Winter Winter · Mid-December

Arashiyama Hanatouro (嵐山花灯路)

Kyoto · Kyoto · Kansai

Held across ten nights in mid-December, the Arashiyama Hanatouro lines approximately five kilometres of pathways through the Arashiyama and Sagano district with 2,500 'roji-andon' stone lanterns, creating a gentle, contemplative winter light walk. Major sites including Tenryu-ji, Jojakko-ji, Okochi Sanso Villa, and the famous bamboo grove are all illuminated, with some temples offering special night-entry tickets rarely available at other times of year. Traditional performing arts such as ikebana flower arrangements and koto music performances are staged along the route, adding cultural depth to the visual spectacle. The event is a sister programme to the spring Hanatoro in Higashiyama, and both are celebrated as quintessentially Kyoto winter experiences.
