The Kurume Minato Matsuri Hanabi Taikai is among southern Fukuoka's premier summer events, held on the broad sandy banks of the Chikugo River — one of Kyushu's longest rivers. The wide river valley allows for an expansive display with large-diameter shells that produce enormous blooms visible for kilometres around. The event is part of the larger Kurume Minato Matsuri, which includes traditional dance performances and food markets celebrating local Kurume specialities such as yaki-tori (Kurume is a famous yaki-tori city) and Kurume ramen. Premium seating areas can be reserved in advance for the best sight lines.
