The forest section of the Nakasendō between Tsumago-juku and Nagiso station passes through cedar groves and deciduous woodland that erupts in autumn colour each November. Unlike the popular Magome-Tsumago route, this shorter trail offers a quieter forest immersion experience with original stone-paved sections, old way-markers, and mountain stream crossings beneath a canopy of turning maple and beech. Tsumago-juku itself, one of Japan's most pristine preserved post towns, provides a historic anchor point with traditional soba restaurants and craft shops. The combination of forest autumn colour and feudal-era streetscape is rare even by Japanese standards.
