The Kumamoto Shirakawaen Hanabi Taikai is staged along the banks of the Shira River in late July, drawing crowds of over 100,000 people to one of Kumamoto City's premier summer events. The castle's towering black keep, partially reconstructed after the 2016 earthquake, creates an unforgettable silhouette against the bursting shells. Starmines, colour-changing flowers, and Niagara waterfall effects are among the set pieces that fill roughly 75 minutes of continuous display. Spectator zones are set up on both river banks, with premium reserved seating available.
