Kuju Flower Park, situated at 1,000 metres altitude in the Kuju Highland area of Oita, transforms spectacularly in autumn with sweeping fields of pink and white cosmos flowers set against the fiery backdrop of the surrounding Kuju mountain range in peak foliage colour. The park's high elevation means cooler temperatures arrive early, triggering some of Kyushu's most vivid and reliably early autumn foliage displays from mid-October. Over 500 varieties of plants are cultivated across 50 hectares, and as cosmos fade in late October, Japanese maples and deciduous trees take centre stage with deep crimson and amber hues. On clear days, the volcanic silhouette of Kujū mountains provides a dramatic natural backdrop for photography.
