Kotohira-gū (Konpira-san) Autumn Stone Steps Foliage

Kotohira · Kagawa · Shikoku

Kotohira-gū, popularly known as Konpira-san, is one of Shikoku's most celebrated shrines and its steep approach of 785 steps to the main hall is lined with mature maple, camphor, and zelkova trees that turn amber and gold in late November. The forest canopy forms an arched tunnel of colour over the worn stone steps, creating one of Kagawa Prefecture's most atmospheric autumn walks. The full 1,368-step route to the inner shrine passes through several sub-shrines and a nationally registered treasure house. Omiyage shops selling famous Konpira sweets like kompira dog rice crackers line the lower steps, making the approach a lively cultural as well as scenic experience.
