Taikodani Inari Shrine, one of Japan's five great Inari shrines, sits dramatically above the white-walled, carp-filled streets of Tsuwano, its famous 1,000-torii tunnel framed by blazing autumn maples each November. The contrast of vivid vermillion lacquer against golden and crimson foliage makes for extraordinarily photogenic scenes. Views from the hilltop shrine over the Tsuwano valley, with rice paddies and traditional townscape below, are particularly atmospheric in the low autumn light.
