The Kochi Prefectural Makino Botanical Garden, named after Kochi-born botanist Dr Tomitaro Makino, holds one of Japan's most diverse cherry blossom collections with more than 50 varieties blooming across its 6-hectare grounds on Mount Godaisan. Unlike typical hanami parks, the garden labels every species, turning the visit into an educational blossom walk that spans from wild mountain cherries to rare coloured varieties. The spring Cherry Blossom Exhibition, held annually in the modern glass greenhouse complex and outdoor gardens, includes botanical illustrations, talks, and guided tours. The extended bloom period—from late March through mid-April—means visitors have a wider window than most sites.
