Makino Botanical Garden on Godaisan hill in Kochi City honours renowned botanist Tomitaro Makino and contains over 3,000 plant species spread across a beautifully landscaped hillside. The autumn season brings vivid colour to the garden's large-leaved magnolias, Chinese witch hazels, and towering maple groves, typically peaking in mid-to-late November when Kochi's mild climate delays the season slightly compared to other Shikoku sites. The hillside location provides views over Kochi City and, on clear days, the Pacific Ocean, framed by glowing foliage. Special autumn botanical exhibitions are held in the main hall each year, celebrating seasonal plants alongside the garden's permanent collections.
