Kobe Luminarie

Kobe · Hyogo · Kansai

Kobe Luminarie is an annual outdoor light festival held in early December in central Kobe, established in 1995 as a memorial for the victims of the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake. The installation transforms the streets around the former Foreign Settlement district into glowing tunnels and domes constructed from thousands of intricately patterned LED lights, many designed by Italian artists. The illuminated archways stretch for hundreds of meters, drawing over three million visitors during its run each year. The event carries deep emotional resonance for the Kobe community while serving as one of Japan's most photographed winter illumination spectacles.
