The Kirishima mountain range in northern Kagoshima Prefecture is a UNESCO-listed geopark straddling the Kagoshima–Miyazaki border, featuring over 20 volcanic peaks, crater lakes, and one of Kyushu's most revered shrines, Kirishima-Jingū. The region's abundant geothermal activity feeds numerous ryokan with milky sulphur-rich onsen waters, while hiking trails wind through highland fields of royal azaleas that blaze pink and purple each April and May. According to Japanese mythology, this is where Ninigi-no-Mikoto, ancestor of the imperial family, descended from the heavens — giving the area profound spiritual significance.
