Kintai Bridge, a five-arch wooden masterpiece built in 1673, is one of Japan's three famous bridges and becomes even more majestic when surrounded by autumn foliage. The riverside park (Kikko Park) is lined with maple and ginkgo trees that frame the bridge in warm gold and crimson by mid-November. A ropeway carries visitors up to Iwakuni Castle for panoramic views of the colour-draped Nishiki River valley far below. Evening illuminations of the bridge during the koyo season create an especially romantic atmosphere.
