The village of Kijoka in Ogimi, northern Okinawa, is the last remaining production centre of bashofu, a rare textile woven from banana plant fibre listed as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. In October and November the surrounding plantain and mixed subtropical groves take on a gentle golden hue, and local craftswomen open their workshops for guided small-group tours. Visitors observe the labour-intensive process from fibre extraction to loom weaving and can try a short weaving session. The village's mountain valley setting, with the Aha River nearby, adds to the peaceful autumn atmosphere.
