Festival Snow/Winter Winter · December – January

Matsushima Oshima Island Winter Illumination

Matsushima · Miyagi · Tohoku

Each winter, the historic bay town of Matsushima—famed for its 260 pine-forested islands and counted among Japan's three most celebrated views—hosts illumination events that drape the Oshima Island footbridge, the Godaido Hall, and the waterfront promenade in warm seasonal lights. The reflections of the illuminations dancing across the calm bay water create a dreamlike counterpoint to the rugged island silhouettes. Visitors can combine the evening illuminations with a night cruise aboard a sightseeing boat or enjoy fresh oysters, for which the bay is equally renowned. The atmosphere is relaxed and romantic, drawing couples and photographers throughout the winter.
