From early November, the gardeners of Kanazawa's Kenroku-en — consistently ranked among Japan's top three landscape gardens — erect the distinctive rope structures known as yukitsuri over approximately 200 pine trees, most notably the 220-year-old 'Karasaki Pine.' The ropes radiate from a central pole like a tent, forming elegant conical canopies that become the defining visual symbol of a Kanazawa winter. When snow falls, the effect is breathtakingly beautiful, with the weighted ropes creating geometric white sculptures throughout the garden. The technique, unique to the Kaga region, has been practised continuously for over 200 years.
