Established in 1820 by order of the Kaga Domain, Higashi Chaya retains its original Edo-period layout of two-storey ochaya (geisha teahouses) facing each other along a single atmospheric street. Today several teahouses operate as museums, cafés, and craft shops specialising in Kanazawa's renowned gold-leaf (kinpaku) arts. Visitors can arrange ozashiki geisha banquet experiences and sample traditional sweets at century-old wagashi makers within the district.
