Kakunodate Matsuri (Hikiyama Float Festival)

Kakunodate · Akita · Tohoku

Kakunodate Matsuri, held 7–9 September at Shinmei and Yakushido shrines, is the beloved autumn festival of Akita's famous samurai district. Its most thrilling element is the 'float confrontation' (yamaguruma-no-keisou), in which two ornate hikiyama floats — decorated with dolls depicting historical and mythological scenes — are pulled by rival neighbourhood teams and forced into a head-on collision, each side trying to push the other back. Accompanied by hayashi festival music and the shouts of hundreds of townspeople, the spectacle is both festive and fiercely competitive. The festival has been celebrated for over 300 years and is an Akita Prefecture Designated Intangible Folk Cultural Property.
