Kakunodate's Bukeyashiki (samurai residence district) is celebrated for its weeping cherry trees in spring, but the broad Hiburi-gawa riverside boulevard and the historic district lanes transform equally beautifully in autumn. Ginkgo trees lining the river embankment turn a luminous gold, while maples within the old samurai compound walls flush deep crimson against white-plastered kurazukuri storehouses. Several samurai residences remain open as museums where visitors can examine armour, lacquerware, and craftwork alongside the season's colour. The compact, walkable town makes self-guided koyo touring straightforward from Kakunodate Station on the Akita Shinkansen.
