Shibata Kajo Park is home to approximately 4,000 cherry trees spread across the earthworks and moats of the former Shibata Castle, earning it a place on Japan's official top-100 cherry blossom list. The reflection of blossoms in the wide castle moats is the park's signature image, especially stunning at dawn. The annual Shibata Oshiro Matsuri (Castle Festival) accompanies the bloom with traditional performing arts, local sake tasting events, and street food. Due to Niigata's cooler climate, the bloom arrives later than in central Honshu, making it a convenient secondary destination on a spring itinerary.
