Kairakuen in Mito is one of Japan's three great gardens—alongside Kenrokuen and Korakuen—and while it is world-famous for its 3,000 plum trees in late winter, the arrival of cherry blossoms in April extends its spring glory considerably. Over 100 cherry trees including weeping varieties bloom around the garden's scenic Senba Lake, creating a layered seasonal display. The adjacent Kobuntei villa and the lakeside promenade offer beautifully composed viewpoints for photography. Mito's Kodokan school grounds, a short walk away, also boast cherry trees and provide a historic samurai-era context.
