Izumi City in northern Kagoshima is home to one of the world's most remarkable wildlife spectacles: the annual wintering of over 10,000 cranes, primarily hooded cranes and white-naped cranes, on the Izumi Plain from October through March. The Izumi Crane Festival celebrates this natural phenomenon with guided birdwatching tours, crane-themed cultural performances, local food markets, and educational programmes at the Izumi Crane Observatory. At dawn and dusk, the sight of thousands of cranes taking flight simultaneously over golden rice paddies is considered one of Japan's greatest natural wonders. The event highlights conservation efforts that have helped crane populations recover significantly since the 1950s.
