Fukuroda Falls in Daigo, Ibaraki Prefecture, is designated one of Japan's three great waterfalls (nihon sandai meibaku) and is equally spectacular in autumn when the surrounding gorge walls are draped in vivid red and orange maples. The four-tiered falls drop 120 metres through a narrow ravine that concentrates both the sound of rushing water and the colour of surrounding foliage. An observation tunnel carved into the cliff allows close-up views of the cascade framed by autumn colour from multiple levels. The Kuji River valley surrounding the falls extends the scenic experience further upstream.
