Hiratsuka's Tanabata Matsuri is recognised as one of Japan's three great Tanabata festivals, attracting several million visitors each year during the first weekend of July. The festival is famous for its enormous, elaborately decorated bamboo tanzaku poles lining the shopping streets, and the week's celebrations conclude with a major fireworks display over the city. The combination of traditional Tanabata star lore, vivid handmade decorations, and a full-scale pyrotechnics show makes this a uniquely layered cultural event. It is easily reached from Tokyo via the JR Tokaido Line to Hiratsuka Station.
