Running from December through February, the Otsu Hikari no Michi illumination adorns the promenade and zelkova tree-lined avenues near Otsu Port and the Biwako Hall with cascading LED lights, creating long shimmering corridors reflected dramatically in the dark waters of Lake Biwa. The display extends along the Nagisamichi lakeside path, offering unobstructed views of the illuminated lake surface and, on clear nights, Mount Hiei rising behind. Local restaurants and cafes along the route extend their hours, making it a popular evening dining destination, while pleasure boat cruises depart Otsu Port to view the lights from the water. The combination of mountain backdrop, lake reflections, and historic city streets makes this one of Shiga Prefecture's signature winter attractions.
