Takayama's Higashiyama Teramachi pilgrim trail connects thirteen temples and five shrines along a forested hillside east of the old town, reaching peak autumn colour from late October. The 3.5 km walking course passes through maple and cherry groves, quiet graveyards, and moss-covered stone lanterns that evoke a meditative atmosphere unique to Hida. In the evening, select temple precincts are softly illuminated, casting warm light on the turning foliage. The route ends near the Higashiyama Folk Art Gallery, where Edo-period crafts complement the outdoor experience.
