Each autumn, the sacred precincts of Dazaifu Tenmangū — one of Japan's most revered Shinto shrines and the spiritual centre of Kyushu — host a spectacular chrysanthemum exhibition with thousands of expertly cultivated kiku blooms arranged in traditional display styles. The Kiku Matsuri showcases competition-grade chrysanthemums trained into kengai (cascade), ozukuri (thousand-bloom), and danzukuri (tiered) forms by dedicated cultivators from across Fukuoka Prefecture. Against the backdrop of the shrine's plum-tree gardens and the famous 'flying plum' legend of deity Sugawara no Michizane, the event combines spiritual atmosphere with horticultural artistry. Evening illuminations of the shrine and its famous hiden bridge over the sacred pond extend the experience into the night.
