Goryokaku is Japan's first Western-style star-shaped fortress, built in 1866, and its moat and earthworks are lined with approximately 1,600 Somei Yoshino cherry trees. The Goryokaku Tower observation deck provides a matchless bird's-eye view of the star-shaped fort outlined in soft pink bloom. At ground level, visitors stroll the moat paths under blossoming canopies and enjoy hanami picnics on the open lawns. Evening light-up events extend enjoyment well into the night, and the nearby Hakodate city scenery adds to the atmosphere.
