Mount Godaisan, rising gently behind Kochi city, is home to Chikurin-ji, the 31st temple of the Shikoku Pilgrimage and one of the most beautiful in autumn. The temple's five-storey pagoda stands among ancient cedar and maple trees that flush deep red and gold from late November. The adjacent Makino Botanical Garden also offers colourful autumn plantings along walking paths. The combined temple and garden setting provides a rare chance to enjoy koyo within easy reach of central Kochi.
